We’ve Processed Cardboard for 5,000 Trench Candles!
Hardly had we unloaded a new batch of tins from our generous donor Silgan Packing Metal in Nové Mesto nad Váhom, and we were already back at work—this time on preparing cardboard.
To produce a trench candle, we need a tin, cardboard, and wax. We manufacture in series. Our first batch used large tins (like those for peas or corn), the second used tall tins from cat food, and the third used the current standard—small meat tins, which we’ve just received again. That means series four is now ready to begin!
Efficient Production, Step by Step
The second step after securing tins is preparing the wick—which, in our case, is made from cardboard. We purchased 220 kg of industrial scrap cardboard for less than CZK 8/kg, enough for nearly 9,400 candles. This part of the process is handled by my brother Martin.
Martin cuts the cardboard into strips, then trims them to the final dimensions of the tins. The third step is cutting a small groove into the cardboard for easy assembly—Martin even created a special jig that allows him to process dozens of pieces at once. Having spent his life working with wood, he brings the skills and tools needed. Precision is crucial—it ensures smooth and efficient candle assembly later.
Martin also oversees the assembly and gathers feedback, which so far has been excellent. Whenever we find an opportunity to improve the process—make pouring easier, or speed up assembly—we act on it. Often, small adjustments make the biggest difference.
Why "Stars" Instead of Rolled Candles?
This series uses wider cardboard, so we’ll be placing two pieces facing each other inside each tin. We’ve practically stopped making individual rolled-wick candles. We now prefer the “star” design, which is more universal, burns longer, and is better suited for use in stoves—soldiers prefer it. If we had to make star wicks by hand, they’d be far more labor-intensive than rolled candles. That’s why more rolled candles exist overall—they require less wax and burn for a shorter time.
But when it comes to utility, the star wins.
