Prostor X: A Czech Medical Student in Ukraine – “I’m Stitching Together Fathers So They Can Live”

The courage of Czech volunteers in Project Phoenix — and their determination to help in what is arguably one of the darkest places on earth right now — is nothing short of inspiring. Thank you, even from those of us who remain at home.

It’s vital to remember that some among us have gone far beyond the ordinary in supporting Ukraine, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude for their bravery. One such person is Karolína, along with her colleagues. Even though this interview isn’t brand new, it remains highly relevant, which is why we’ve included it in our list of news updates.

“No photo or video can capture what’s happening on the battlefield in Ukraine,”
says 21-year-old Karolína, who recently returned. The reality far exceeded anything she expected — and she wasn’t prepared for it. It was worse, more intense, more brutal.
It’s difficult to explain the physical reaction to trauma — how the stomach clenches and nausea hits, a reflex meant to purge the horrors one has witnessed.

“When you see it — and in my case, when you’re a medical student and you’re touching it, treating it, being a part of it — there’s simply no way to translate that to others,”
admits Karolína, a volunteer from Project Phoenix who works on the front lines, stabilizing wounded soldiers and evacuating them to hospitals.

She risks her life to save theirs.

“The fact that someone is bleeding, or has lost a leg, and we’re able to save them — that someone’s father doesn’t die — it’s… maybe a little addictive. But I see meaning in it.”
